Wordpress Multisite - SSL without stopping the web server?

Hi all,

I'm currently facing with a problem adding the SSL certificates with the bncert tool the problem is the stop of the services every time on add a new ssl certificate.

The time generating certificates and all the process take too much time and this is a problem for my clients because all the sites are down during this process.

Exist any way to reduce the time or not shutdown all the web services every time i add a new certificate?

Also, it is recommended to apply these changes during the hours of less traffic to reduce issues.

I tried this manual but require restart the server too.

Yes i currently add certificates in hours of less traffic.

If want to sell automated webs i can't with this problem with the SSL certificates because every time a new client create his web all my clients receive a temporal web stop.

I can't sell automated webs with this problem. This problem is critical T_T.

Hi @davidg,

You could avoid having to stop the instance if you configure a EC2 loadbalancer with its own certificate.

Another possibility would be to use DNS instead of HTTP validation. In that case you would not need to stop the server for the validation to occur. Unfortunately we don't have a guide for that. I found the following guide that explains more about it:

Hi @michiel,

I'm using Amazon Lightsail with Wordpress Multisite Bitnami

I tried the load balancer but Amazon Lightsail can create only two certificates T.T

I need to create the certificate automatically when new site is created and this for tons of sites.

Is incredible the dificicult of adding SSL certificates.

Hi @lucasp,

Automating adding SSL certificates while not stopping the server isn't straightforward. I recommend asking in a dedicated Let's Encrypt forum to gather information on how to do that.
