Virtual Machine deployment - initial setup issues

Sorry in advance. I'm new to bitnami. I downloaded the virtual machine ova image from the website and deployed it to our VMware cluster. The machine started up fine and I can get into the console. The documentation makes it sound like you can just navigate to the machine IP to see a web admin. I also tried adding the webmin, but also can't navigate to that on the default 10000 port. My bitnami VM can ping out and I can ping it. Am I missing something?

I'm not trying to do anything fancy. My goal is to deploy 3 of these appliances for the purpose of having a redis cluster and using the redis-sentiel (which it looks like is prepped out of box). A web admin would be nice too just to check on the VM status and do power operations, etc.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I should have mentioned too. My goal is to get example 2 working using the bitnami deployments (1 redis master, 2 redis replicas, all 3 running sentinel).

Hi @adamrgilman, the Bitnami Redis single VM does not include any web admin.

(Note: Previous releases included a HTTP page with information about the credentials, but nothing more.)

When you launch the OVA, you should notice that Redis is running on port 6379. The port is closed for external access, but should be accessible in the internal network. You can read about it more here: https://docs.bitnami.com/virtual-machine/faq/administration/use-firewall/

That would require you to customize the Bitnami configuration of Redis, as it is pre-configured to work in a single VM environment only. Redis Sentinal is installed but not enabled. Enabling a cluster configuration would require some efforts to get it working.

Have you checked Bitnami Redis Multi-Tier? It may be available for deployment in your cluster if you have vRA. https://marketplace.vmware.com/vsx/solutions/redismultitier-blueprint-4-0-14-4?ref=search

Thank you for the reply. The vmware vRA sounds nice, but we are a small operation with Essentials Plus licensing and no vRealize suite licensing. I'll look into getting the stand-alone OVA deployment updated for clustering, sentinel and web admin capabilities.

@marcos Maybe I'm missing something yet. I was following the use-firewall link to try to get remote access enabled for ssh. It's odd because the documentation says by default ssh should be allowed. I ran the ufw command to allow ssh and it said the rule was existing. For some reason though when I try to ssh to the IP address of the virtual machine I get a connection refused. I tried from the same LAN segment as well so it wasn't passing through any routable devices. Any ideas if I'm missing something? Or is the downloadable OVA setup differently from the posted documentation?

I'm kind of at a loss because it sounds like ufw is just a cli layer to manage iptables so I don't know what else in the appliance would be blocking it. Is there a chance that sshd isn't even installed/running? My linux knowledge is sparse as of late. I used it much more 10 years ago.

Not to keep an email chain going back and forth for things I'm sure you think are trivial, is the posted downloadable OVA maybe out of date? I was doing some testing with the documentation and it seems like the OVA is running redis version 4. Is that the standard deployment still for bitnami's redis or is it moved to redis 5 if I were to do this from scratch?

Hi, @adamrgilman.

You probably need to enable the SSH server in order to connect to your machine. See this article for instructions on how to do so: https://docs.bitnami.com/virtual-machine/faq/get-started/enable-ssh/

On the other hand, Bitnami OVAs are using Redis 5. You can download them from our website: https://bitnami.com/stack/redis/virtual-machine

I think I have it all working. I was struggling with getting webmin to work correctly. Not sure if the setup.sh was supposed to add itself as a startup service. I ended up creating a start script for it and putting it in the /opt/bitmani/scripts/init folder then creating a symbolic link in /opt/bitnami/var/init/post-start to have the script be executed on VM startup. That seems to be working.

Sorry. Ran into one last thing. How do I get Redis to start up in Sentinel mode? I can't find the entry point for where the redis server startup is getting called. What is the preferred method to run sentinel? redis-server with the sentinel command line arguments or the redis-sentinel binary in the redis/bin folder? Thanks in advance. I've been struggling to find documentation on this.

Hi @adamrgilman,
A way to start it is using the following command:

redis-server <pathToSentinel.conf> --sentinel

Are you getting issues starting it?

No, sorry. I should have described it better. I can start sentinel mode
manually no issues. I just can't find the proper place where the OS is
starting redis on boot currently to swap/update that with sentinel mode.
