I got an email today that there is an update to my app:
Greetings from AWS Marketplace,

Thank you for subscribing to WordPress Certified by Bitnami and Automattic.

We are writing to inform you that Bitnami has added a new version to WordPress Certified by Bitnami and Automattic on AWS Marketplace. As an existing customer, your subscription to the product, any running instances and access to previous versions are unaffected. However, Bitnami does recommend you to update to the latest version, WordPress Certified by Bitnami and Automattic/5.7-2 on Debian 10 by visiting https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B00NN8Y43U.

For additional questions or upgrade information, please contact Bitnami directly. Click here to visit the seller’s profile page on AWS Marketplace.

Release notes for WordPress Certified by Bitnami and Automattic/5.7-2 on Debian 10:

  • Fix wp-cli permissions * Updated OpenSSL to 1.1.1k * Updated SQLite to 3.35.2

However when clicking on the link I don’t see a way to upgrade my installation. The Bitnami tutorial says to upgrade using CloudFront, but I did not install using CloudFront, I just selected Bitnami WordPress from the AWS marketplace and initialized a new EC2 instance based on it.

How best can I go about upgrading?

Hi @serafon99,

Thanks for using Bitnami. You can either update WordPress directly from the admin panel or launch a fresh new server with the updated components and then migrate your current data to the new site

Hi @gongomgra, I too need to get my Wordpress updated to 5.8 (currently on 5.7.2)
Could you please explain the steps to update Wordpress from the Admin panel?

By Admin panel you mean WordPress dashboard? There is currently an update option available on my WP dashboard, but I am not sure if this is the correct way to update WP on AWS. The last time I updated it via the dashboard, there was a critical error on wp and I had no way to get back into my WP. Please, could you explain to me the correct method to do it without harming the WP?
P.S I am not a technical guy actually. So I don’t know the FTP stuff when something goes wrong.

Hi @rahulchavan34,

Thanks for your message. Yes, it is possible to upgrade WordPress from the WordPress dashboard by using its internal option. However, notice the new version will continue using the same base components your current version is using (PHP, Apache and MySQL). If the new version has any error with these components, it may affect your site.

We highly recommend you to create a complete server backup before updating the application. This way, you can restore your current server status in case something fails.

Because this is an old thread, we will close it. Please open a new one if you have any other questions or issue when upgrading the application. Remember creating a server backup before updating WordPress is very important.

I got the same notification (Request to upgrade Bitnami instance). In the AWS Console where can I check for Bitnami instance ? It was created by my previous colleagues

Hi @srikanthanjuri,

You can launch a new instance using the AWS Console/Marketplace or the Bitnami Launchpad for AWS and migrate the data from that instance to the new one

Let us know if you need help when launching the new instance.
