Getting "Server hangup" in browser sometimes. Most recently when I WP 5.5 updated.

Apache Error Log shows:
AH00124: Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects due to probable configuration error.

Thank you for your help. I have gone through each of the posts you pointed out but have not found my missing lines in the required places.

Most of the time our WordPress Multisite network is working with subdirectories. http://njdepwptest.net/aqes/

Can you be more specific on which lines that we missed?

Hi @glenn.curtis,

According to the post I linked and your config, I think you are not setting the PATH_CURRENT_SITE to your desired subdirectory. Also please check the value in the Apache config is properly set in the apache/conf/vhosts/wordpress-vhost.conf and apache/conf/vhosts/wordpress-https-vhost.conf files. I think you are not defining /aqes the same way that the linked post defined /wordpress

Thank you for your review. The Wordpress main site is at the root level so the PATH_CURRENT_SITE '/' is correct. Likewise, the value in the Apache config is properly set at '/' .

The '/aqes' is an example of a new blog site on the wordpress network. We are not using subdomains, we are using sub-directories for our new blog sites. Another example of a new site blog is http://njdepwptest.net/parksandforests/

http://njdepwptest.net/ is the root level main site.

In reviewing, https://docs.bitnami.com/general/apps/wordpress-multisite/administration/use-htaccess/, should both our wordpress-vhost.conf and wordpress-htaccess.conf files contain rewrites to the exact same location? This seems redundant.

Please advise

Thanks for the information. It looks like the configuration for the PATH_CURRENT_SITE is ok as you are accessing your main site with http://njdepwptest.net/. Can you follow the steps in our guide about how to configure Multisite using subdomains? I don't think you will need to edit the htaccess file, I think the error must be in a different place

Thank you. I have previously followed your guide about how to configure Multi-site. We are using sub-directories and not subdomains.

From your article, I could not execute sudo ./bnconfig --machine_hostname njdepwptest.net
Our bitnami WordPress stack does not contain the file /opt/bitnami/apps/wordpress/bnconfig

Hi @glenn.curtis,

As you are not using a Bitnami SingleVM solution, that guide won't work for you. We do not have a guide to configure a WordPress Multitier Multisite so you will need to follow the official documentation to configure the application.

I didn't find this in the official documentation but I found how to change the main domain of WordPress Multisite here

You can also configure the subdomains by following this other guide

Please note that they are not bitnami-specific guides.

Thank you for your information. I have verified that our Multisite WordPress main domain and the configuration of the Subdirectories has been set up correctly.

Do you believe that the server hangup is caused by a misconfigured htaccess file?

Why does /opt/bitnami/apache/conf/vhosts/wordpress-vhost.conf and /opt/bitnami/apache/conf/vhosts/htaccess/wordpress-htaccess.conf both contain rewrite rules?

We are disabling .htaccess files by default for security and performance reasons. You can get more information about this in the next link

As mentioned above, we are including the content of the .htaccess files in the /opt/bitnami/apache/conf/vhosts/htaccess/wordpress-htaccess.conf file, and they can contain some rewrite rules. Can you check your question about those rewrite rules in the official WordPress forum? We only copy the content of the files and we merge them in a single file, so for questions on its content the WordPress developers can give you a better reply than we can

Our wordpress-vhost.conf file was revised to remove the wordpress rewrites. Seems it was a duplication of the wordpress rewrites in the wordpress-htacess.conf file.

I will monitor the error logs to see if the
AH00124: Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects due to probable configuration error. Use 'LimitInternalRecursion' to increase the limit if necessary. Use 'LogLevel debug' to get a backtrace.
error comes back.

Do you have any other suggestions that may help?
Do you need another support code?

If you followed our documentation to enable and configure Multisite in WordPress, everything should work as expected. If you can access the different sites now, it means that the app is configured correctly.

Please create a new topic in the forum if you find any issue and we can help you debug it.

Hi Jota,
The duplicate rewrites in the wordpress-vhost.conf file was causing the issue. Once I removed them, the internal redirects error went away.
