Describe here your question/suggestion/issue (expected and actual results):
I'm a tech support Windows guy with enough background to be dangerous to work in other environments. Linux has me going to the manual (Google) constantly. My knowledge of all the pieces of this environment are slim, so I don't know how they all fit together and don't have months to learn it all.
I've installed Discourse from the VMDK, just deployed the OVA on a free version of ESXi 5.5 Followed the documentation to bring it up. Tweaked our firewall to allow traffic to internet. Our customer requested this setup as a test bed for their customers. Part of his request was to take a backup monthly. Email is working on the current system for Discourse. Everything is working; well almost.
Following the documentation I have run the commands manually for stopping the services, running the tar command, etc. I setup my enterprise FTP server so I could scp the tar.gz file to it for safe keeping. Now I'm writing a shell script to do that automatically and then schedule it on cron.
In my script, I want to communicate status via email. What is the best option to do that? Is there a command already available (because of the current setup) that will let me send message from a bash shell script? Do I install sendmail? What are the pitfalls to beware of?
