Description:
I have a mediawiki deployed via Google Cloud. I access the underlying VM, which has 5GB of persistent storage, via the Cloud Shell terminal on the Google website. Today, I went to change something in LocalSettings.php and it's gone! Totally vanished! I even did sudo find / -iname 'LocalSettings.php' and got no results. It's literally not on the machine anymore. Please advise.

Hello @hollemantv,

The folder /opt/bitnami contains the files necessary to run every component present in the VM so having it gone would make MediaWiki impossible to run. Could you please run the following commands and confirm said folder is no longer present in your system:

$ ls /opt/bitnami
$ cat /opt/bitnami/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php

Thanks @fdepaz. Confirmed: no bitnami in opt. Wiki still up and running normally. I'm completely perplexed too.

Hello @hollemantv,

We have a Support Tool that will gather relevant information for us to analyze your configuration and logs. I'm not sure how useful it may be, but it would at least collect some information on processes and memory usage. Again, our options are limited if /opt/bitnami is missing from the system. Could you please execute it on the machine where the stack is running by following the steps described in the guide below?

Thanks. Nothing worked. The tool just prompts you to "enter the location of /opt/bitnami" (a bit funny for a tool that's supposed to locate something to ask you where it is....). Also, there was no code ID anywhere in the process. My only guess is that the VM I'm being logged into is different from the one running the wiki, although that's the only VM I run on Google Cloud. Any more suggestions appreciated.

Thanks @fdepaz for your help. Now the wiki is totally gone. I guess it took google a few days to destroy it.

Hello @hollemantv,

I'm sorry to hear that. There is no way to recover the folder if it was removed at some point so you would need to launch a new instance. To avoid this in the future, I would recommend you creating a backup of your data.

If you have any new issues going forward, do not doubt to open a new thread.

It gets better. Google had just assigned a new ip address to the wiki. It still exists. And there's still no sign of bitnami or any of the mediawiki files anywhere on the VM. I wonder if they're taking me to the wrong VM when I log in to Cloud Shell. But then again it's Google, so with their non-existent customer service I don't think i'll ever know. I think i'm gonna migrate to AWS.
