Do we need to purchase certificate from a certificate authority? I mean if we want to actually seem legit?
And most popular websites are loadbalanced. So in order to allow the certificate to traverse a loadbalancer, you need to configure the loadbalancer appropriately so that the user certificate session isn't lost if the user's session is transferred to another server (part of what a loadbalancer does...balances the website load between multiple servers). Plus, it's a known fact that this does indeed slow down the user experience.
So all these things cost...perhaps not in actual physical cash (except for purchasing the actual certificate from an authorized certificate authority) but in terms of manpower and development time and change control and other issues, not limited to policy and what-not. SSL does not prevent tracking users, right?
