Thank you @jdrios
I apologize for the delay in my response.
I was able to solve the issue. For those who may experience this issue, this is an excellent and precise article about the problem and the solution: Resource Consuming Logrotate by Esteban Pastorino.
The problem is the asterix in the configuration:
Which provokes an infinite rotation.
The next step is to clean the affected directory, for a very large amount of files can be tricky, I had over a million files!
I used a method I have saved from a previous time (be careful and analyze your issue very well before applying this):
sudo mkdir empty_dir
sudo chmod 777 empty_dir
sudo rsync -a --delete empty_dir/ mail/
Be sure to back up any original file you may need.
It worked fine, the directory /var/mail is empty, but for some reason the ls and du commands still report the previous size for the mail directory, maybe @jdrios can shed some light here. ¿?¿?
Hope this helps
