How to update from Linux version to VM version

Keywords: Redmine - Virtual Machines - How to - Upgrade

Since bitnami redmine linux version has stopped to maintain after V4.2.1, if we already used V4.2.1 bitnami redmine linux installed on VPS cloud, is there any fast way to update my bitnami redmine linux on the VPS to newer bitnami redmine VM version 4.2.3?

Sorry but we do not provide Redmine or Ruby installers for Linux anymore. If you want to continue using the solution in your VPS, you have these options:

  • Use the docker image to deploy the solution

  • Deploy a VM locally and copy the /opt/bitnami and /bitnami folders to the VPS

I tried to backup from VPS and no problem, but when I tried restore database to the VM version redmine, the mysql command will ask for the the password of the root user, where can get the password for the root to restore sql database? I have tried the login password ‘bitnami’, but not work.

I found the password to restore the sql database backup file from VPS, but now I got new error when restore database:
ERROR 1273 (HY000) at line 24: Unknown collation: 'utf8mb4_0900_ai_ci’

It seems that the Linux version redmine 4.2.1 using V8.0.24 MySQL Community Server database, but VM version 4.2.3 using V10.4.22 MariaDB, When I backup database from my linux version VPS, then will got error when restore the database to VM version. Is there anyway to fix it?

You can find solutions online to solve this problem

After I copy plugins from Linux version redmine to VM version redmine, then I ran bundle install without problem, then I ran bundle exec rake redmine:plugins RAILS_ENV=production, it will get Mysql2::Error::ConnectionError: Can’t connect to MySQL server on ‘’ (115),

Is this problem because I moved the Mysql database to MariaDB?

I fixed all problem to migrate my VPS Linux redmine to local VM redmine, but when I use browser to open redmine web, it got:
We’re sorry, but something went wrong.

The issue has been logged for investigation. Please try again later.

Please take a look at the Apache’s and Redmine’s log files under /opt/bitnami/apache/logs and /opt/bitnami/redmine. You will need to ensure all the plugins/themes you have are compatible with the Redmine version you deployed. We suggest you ask in the official forums of the application to get more information about that. The app’s documentation should also describe how to achieve what you want to, so please take a look at it too.
