I have installed a local copy of LAMP exactly for development purposes, mainly to work on local Wordpress sites before moving them into production.
I was going to try some CRM app to see if one of them would suit my needs, and having a working module instead of a separate installer would mean to only have to run a single instance of the whole server stack, without having an unnecessary waste of system resources (by using a separate installer you basically must run another full server).
Those two apps were just cited as examples, but probably there are others in the directory that don't currently support the newest DB version.
A choice of which DB version to install during setup could help solve this, but of course it is just a suggestion, I don't know if this would be too much of an hassle to maintain for you.
