@carlos_corrales, I installed it on a remote server with no X, so I assume it was the text mode. My system mysql was already started yesterday, I did not start it for the installer.
Here's something interesting: yesterday the installer offered me an option to choose the MySQL port (presumably because the system mysql was running?). I chose 30364, and it failed with the error I posted above. Today, on a whim, I decided to stop the system mysql service. Now during the install, I was not asked to choose a port, and the installer proceeded with 3306 for mysql without prompting.
Another interesting thing: yesterday, the script which creates the mysql dbs was failing, in addition to "/opt/gitlab-6.7.5-0/mysql/scripts/myscript.sh".
Is it reproducible on your end?

Hi @carlos_corrales: I don't have any special configuration of MySQL (just the stock Ubuntu 13.04 mysql install). I don't even use the system install of mysql (which is why I stopped it before doing a reinstall). Maybe there is something in mysql preventing parallel installs?
I will also try with the 6.8.1 package today to see if it is any different.
