I am having an issue with a WordPress installation running Bitnami's WordPress stack on GCP. This issue happened once before a number of weeks ago and I thought I had resolved it.

I had increased the disk size, then used WP-Optimize to clean the database, to resolve the issue before.

Now this issue is happening again and I'm not sure why. I'm a little lost and don't know where to begin to troubleshoot.

The site is static and there is no new content being published on it regularly, so I'm very confused as to what is eating up all of the space.

Any help is appreciated.

The binary logs contain all the statements that update data in your database, so if you make a lot of operations in your database it is normal for them to grow fast. You can read more about them here: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/internals/en/binary-log-overview.html.

The timestamps on this files are very recent, so they may be related to the operations you did with WP-Optimize. By default, binary logs are set to expire after 30 days.

What can I do to begin troubleshooting / resolve the issue/s?

I ended up deleting the VM and firing up a new one. Restored from a backup... So far so good. Fingers crossed... Still unsure of root cause.

Hi @jmancini,

The database saves all the operations it makes in a file called binlog. You had plenty of them because there were may operations in the database. You can expire those files after some days by following the steps in this guide

Regarding why you had so many operations in the database, it depends on the number of users you have and the plugins/theme you use. There are plugins that make more requests to the database so those actions are stored so the file size increases.

Creating a new VM did not resolve the issue.

This just randomly started happening, which is why I’m confused.

What should I do to troubleshoot?

Where would I change the MySQL config? (expire_logs_days = 7)

A little background information... There are only 3 users on this site and the content is static... No new plugins, same theme... Nothing has really changed. This was never an issue and only one time before, many months ago, did this same thing happen. I expanded the disk from 10GB to 15GB and it resolved the issue. Now, this issue is happening more often. I expanded the disk from 10GB to 30GB and it has not filled up (yet..?). But even when I had expanded the previous VM to 50GB, that disk filled up, in a matter of hours!

I'm not sure what's going on, but I really need to get to the bottom of this because I can't have the site crashing all the time, and the only workaround being expanding the disk. That's going to be expensive and time consuming.
