I successfully (I believe) installed xampp using the Bitami install packag. The control panel reports no problem. I then download and install the current stable version of joomla. During the joomla install the control panel reports a problem and apache shuts down. If I try to restart apache, it fails. Digging through different problem reports it did appear that something else had control of ports: 80, 443. Following various recommendations, it appeared that the problem was Skype, which was listening to port 80 and 443? Anyway, I altered the configuration file to use port 8080 and 4433 instead. That kind of works, I that meant that I had to accesss the localhost by keying in: localhost:8080 and I guess that is okay but to make sure that PHP was installed correctly I saved a small, "hello world" php script and when I tried to access via browser (Chrome) it reports an error with the php installation and displays the php code including everything as though the browser was a text editor. So ... how do I get around the ":8080" thing and what am I doing wrong regarding php? By the way, I even uninstalled Skype because I could not change it such that it didn't use port 80. I would use the Support tool but I have now uninstalled everything 5 times, trying dofferent settings, etc.
