Lego checks that the domain that it's trying to generate a certificate for is associated to the server where it's run. Just for you to understand the workflow, Lego does:
- Create a standalone web server.
- Create a HTTP connection to the domain to configure.
- Check that the connection is sent to the standalone web server it just created.
Therefore, you need to run it from the same machine. If you're generating a certificate for my-domain.com (associated to the IP X.X.X.X), you must create it from the machine with IP X.X.X.X
