I setup a discourse instance using an AWS m3.medium instance. The performance was ok (I didn't time it, but anecdotally, it didn't seem sluggish). Then, after I configured https using the bncert-tool, the lag increased dramatically.
It only happens via the browser. For instance, when I ping the server from the command line, I get responses back in less than 500ms. However, when I load up the main page, it takes well over 10 seconds to receive the first byte for the main .html page.
Sometimes, rebooting the server will fix the issue for maybe 2 page-loads, and then it reverts back to the long wait times. I remember that the command to configure the hostname failed the first time I ran it -- I'm not sure if it's a red-herring, though. This is the command I'm talking about:
-- sudo /opt/bitnami/apps/APPNAME/bnconfig --machine_hostname IP-ADDRESS
