The PHP 5.4 install in the various MAMP-related stacks is missing the PHP Memcached extension, which is based upon the libmemcached library. This is the more standard and accepted way to connect PHP to the memcached server. There is the older "memcache" extension, but that is missing some features of memcached.
Are there plans to include this soon, and if not, why?

Yes, we are currently shipping the memcache extension but not the "memcached" module. We will add it in our TODO list.

Sorry. memcached is not included yet. However you should be able to install it. The steps are similar to this:
